India race to a ton of 300s

India took the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mohali on Wednesday (December 13) as an opportunity to score their 100th 300-plus team total, becoming the first to achieve the feat.

96 Instances of Australia scoring 300-plus totals, the second most by any team after India's 100 such totals. However, they ended up winning 85 of those instances compared to 78 for India.

283 ODIs played by India when they scored 300 for the first time - 305 for five against Pakistan in Sharjah in April 1996. No other side has played half as many ODIs when they scored 300 for the maiden time.

10 Instances of India scoring 300 or more in 2009 and 2017 - the most for them in a calendar year. India played 31 matches in 2009 and 28 so far this year. They have one more ODIs this year to equal the world record for the same held by Australia, who had 11 300-plus totals from 34 ODIs in 2007.

46 300-plus totals for India at home, the most by any side, followed by 44 for South Africa. The next most they have hit in any country is 12 in England. Zimbabwe remains the only host country (among Test playing countries) where they have not yet scored a 300. The highest in Zimbabwe for India is 294 for 8 in Harare in 2013.

21 300-plus totals for India against Sri Lanka - the most for them against an opponent. They have scored 15 against Australia and 14 each against England and Pakistan. On the other hand, India have conceded 22 such totals against Australia - the most conceded by a team against any opposition in all ODIs.

Surprisingly, scoring big doesn't ensure they end up winning often as their win-loss ratio is only the sixth-best among the ten oldest Full Member nations. They also hold the dubious record of losing most times after posting 300 or higher - 20, followed by England's 17.

6 300-plus totals for India at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo out of the 43 ODIs they played there - the most for them at any venue. They have five each at Chinnasway Stadium in Bengaluru, National Stadium in Karachi and Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. The other end of the spectrum is Harare Sports Club where they have played 21 ODIs without registering a 300-plus score. Among the home venues, they have played 19 matches at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi with a highest total of 299.

69 Instances of MS Dhoni appearing in ODIs where India posted 300 or higher - the most by any player in ODI history. Yuvraj Singh (54) and Sachin Tendulkar (52) are the next two in the list. Among players outside India, Ricky Ponting and AB de Villiers have appeared the most - 50 each.

23 Instances of Sachin Tendulkar top scoring in an innings when India scored 300 or more - comfortably the most by any player in ODI history, nine ahead of next placed Tillakaratne Dilshan. Tendulkar has scored 3906 runs in his 52 appearances - the most by any. Virat Kohli is next on the list of individual top-scorer when the team total exceeds 300 with 11, followed by MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma with nine each.

34.1 The fewest overs taken by India to reach 300 - against Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009. They ended up scoring 414 in that match which was their then highest in ODIs and currently the second highest after 418 for five against West Indies in Indore in 2011.

27 Instances of India scoring 300-plus in run chases - ten more than the next placed Sri Lanka. They went on to win 17 of those, lost nine and tied one - both the most for any team. Out of the six successful 350-plus chases in ODIs, three belongs to India - 362 for one against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, 351 for four against Australia in Nagpur in the same series and 356 for seven against England in Pune earlier this year.
